Subject:HMS Javelin
I was inspired to 'Google' HMS Javelin after looking at some photographs my late father in law took while serving among its crew in 1946. His name was David Jenkins known to us all as 'Jenks'. Among the photographs incidentally is a photograph of a grave captioned 'Engineer HM Tug "Captive"'. I cannot confirm that it was on HMS Javelin that Dai and a fellow rating ran a scheme whereby they sold lottery tickets with their wages as the lottery prize. As he explained, each ticket hardly cost anything and my impression is that a large proportion of the crew bought them, so that the money that was collected was very much greater than the value of the prize. He and his shipmate got into some trouble over this. He also told a remarkable story about a club on Malta from which all crew were ordered to stay away from. Naturally many went there because of this ban, curious to discover more. They were astonished to see that as part of a stage showw, a young girl clearly 'under age' was about to be made to take part in a sexual act. Insensed by this the sailors quickly smashed the club pieces in disgust. Of life in the RN, Dai said 'It made you realise there were other places in the World besides Aberystwyth!'

Frank was my mum's brother, he was known as Bunt. Listed as Boy 1c, P/JX 155989, he was killed as above. A very young man, aged 18. I never knew him but have a lovely photo of him in uniform wearing HMS Dunedin on the hatband, and a copy of a press cutting giving news of the attack on HMS Javelin. His body was bought back to the family home in Mountcastle Rd, Leicester, and he was buried in Gilroes Cemetery in the same plot as his Father (my Grandfather) Frederick Moore, who was also in the Royal Navy before and during WW1, serving on HMS Monarch and others. It's wonderful to find this site and Roll of Honour. So many lives cut short, they deserve to be remembered. Thankyou.

NEAL Harry. Memories never fade of our dear brother, killed in action November 29, 1940, H.M.S. Javelin. Sadly missed. Brother Cyril, sister Eileen. The above is the citation posted each year in the Portsmouth News by Harry's beloved surviving family. He was my Grandfathers Brother, Charlie, sadly departed. Obvioulsy I never knew Harry, but I serve with pride in the Senior Service in which he made the ultimate sacrifice.

My Dad, Bernard Corrigan, served on the Javelin and told me many stories of his exploits. I think he had the rank of Chief Petty Officer. I would love to hear from anyone who knew my Dad, who sadly passed away in 1996 and had a naval burial at sea.

My father, Harry Clarke, was killed in action November 1940, my mother was pregnant with me. I know very little about him as my mother died many years ago. I would like to know more of him if anyone does know of him. I only have one photgraph in boxing pose - he was a champion boxer in Northern Ireland, fly weight I think. Regards Maureen (born Charlotte Maureen Clarke)

A very interesting web site. My Father Ken Cameron served on HMS Javelin from Dec 1944 until July 1946. He has just celebrated his 84th birthday.(10.07.09) He was on-board during the ill-discipline incident of 1945 and had a hand in resolving it.
